Abstract

Dangerous rain-wind-induced vibrations can occur in cables of cable-stayed bridges and in the steel hangers of large arch bridges with a circular cross sections and low values of structural damping. Serviceability and safety of the structure may be reduced. The essential exciting mechanisms of these vibrations have been identified during wind tunnel tests and are explained in the present paper.
