Abstract
The mechanisms of intramultiplet mixing and intermultiplet transitions in a highly excited cesium atom, induced by collisions with inert gas atoms, are discussed. It is argued that the crossing of the excited 2Π-molecular state by the repulsive 2Σ-state provides the main channel for nonelastic events. Estimated cross sections are in disagreement with available experimental data.
