Abstract

A new experimental technique is described for a comprehensive investigation of electron impact formation of metastable noble-gas atoms over a wide energy range. The results of excitation of metastable states of He, Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe and the detailed analysis of the collision kinematics are reported. It is shown that the structure in the differential cross section for metastable production is caused by both dynamic and kinematic effects. Experimental results are compared with theoretical ones.
