Abstract

Inelastic electron scattering with energy transfers in the region of the Δ(3, 3) resonance is described by the excitation of nuclear ΔA ∗ resonances. Compared to the quasifree Δ excitation picture we observe an increase of the excitation strength at energies below the quasifree resonance peak as is indicated by recent experimental results from Saclay. This contribution reflects the ΔN-dynamics in the nuclear medium. We conclude that the deep inelastic (e, e′) reaction offers a convenient tool to study the internal N ∗ excitations of bound nucleons and thus complements the information obtained from pion induced reactions.
