Abstract

A study of the polarized optical absorption and Zeeman spectra of the ( 4 A 2 × 2 T 1) singly-excited Cr 3+ dimer manifold in Rb 3 Cr 2 Br 9 is reported, and the results are discussed in terms of an exchange theory applicable to multielectron occupancy of orbitally degenerate states. Other theoretical approaches are also considered and compared with the theory used here. A brief review of the exchange effects in compounds isomorphic with Rb 3Cr 2Br 9 is given.
