Abstract
Impedance spectra have been measured for the exchange of K + and Na + between aqueous electrolyte and DOS plasticized PVC membranes containing ionophores. The ionophores examined were valinomycin, di-benzo-18-crown-6 and a related crown ether (propeller crown). For all the K + cases the exchanges appeared to be rapid single step reactions at ionophore: K + ratios of 2, with Warburg impedances appearing at an ionophore: K + ratio of 1:1. For Na + a more varied pattern of behaviour was found. From an analysis of the Warburg impedances the concentrations of free metal cations in the membranes can be estimated.
