Abstract

AbstractThe ventriculo‐aqueductal perfusion technique was used for a quantitative study of the transport of glucose between the cerebral ventricles and surrounding tissues in cats. The inflow perfusion fluid contained U14C‐D‐glucose and unlabelled D‐glucose. Carrier systems appeared to operate symmetrically. Intraventricular acetazolamide or insulin did not influence the transport of glucose in the brain. At zero net flux of glucose in the system the concentration of glucose in brain extracellular fluid was estimated to be the same as in the ventricles, i.e. about 40 per cent below the concentration in arterial plasma water.
