Abstract

The form of the exchange interaction between two Co2+ ions, each at a site having octahedral symmetry, is derived using the formalisms of second-quantisation and double-tensor operators. Both first-order contributions, from the two-particle spin-independent Hamiltonian, and second-order contributions, from the one-particle spin-independent Hamiltonian are considered. The changes in the g values of one of the Co2+ ions in a pair are derived and the results obtained are discussed in relation to Co2+ pairs in MgO.
