Abstract

The exchange energy of a two-dimensional electron gas subject to Landau quantization in a magnetic field is analyzed here using thermodynamic Green's function methods. A careful evaluation of the exchange energy is carried out for high field strengths and the quantum strong field limit is examined. For low-intermediate field strengths we obtain De Haas-Van Alphen oscillatory corrections to the zero field exchange energy calculated by Stern.
