Abstract

In order to achieve optimal performance with giant magnetoresistance (GMR) type sensors various phenomena in layered magnetic structures turn out to be useful and are topics of current research. This is the effect of exchange anisotropy, the interlayer exchange coupling and the GMR effect itself. This article gives an overview of the current status of research on these phenomena including also record values for the strengths of the effects. A discussion, how further improvements of sensors based on the present understanding can be obtained, will be given.
