Abstract

Excess molar volumes at the temperature 303.15 K of the ternary liquid mixtures ofN,N-dimethylformamide and cyclopentanone with 1-alkanols have been measured as a function of composition. The alkanols include 1-propanol, 1-butanol, 1-pentanol, and 1-hexanol. The excess molar volumes of the binary mixtures ofN,N-dimethylformamide with cyclopentanone were also measured atT=303.15 K over the entire mole fraction range. The excess volumes were measured directly using a dilatometer. For all the systems investigated, theVmEvalues are positive over the entire mole fraction range. Excess volumes increase in magnitude with increase in the chain length of alcohol. The excess volume data are interpreted on the basis of possible intermolecular interactions between unlike molecules. All the experimental values are compared with predicted values based upon an empirical relation.
