Abstract

Excess molar enthalpies H m E for ( xH 2O + (1 − x)C 6H 6)(g) and (H 2O + (1 − x)C 6H 12)(g) have been measured at p = 101.325 kPa over the temperature range 363.2 to 393.2 K. Cross-term second virial coefficients B 12 have been obtained from the measurements. B 12s for (water + cyclohexane) are in agreement with equations which fit B 12s for mixtures of (water + n-alkane) whereas B 12s for (water + benzene) are about twice as negative as expected. A weak donor-acceptor interaction between water and benzene is postulated. An examination of B 12s for (benzene + acetone) and (benzene + ether) supports this view.
