Abstract

Isopiestic vapour pressure measurements have been made on aqueous solutions of NaCl + NaNO 3, NaCl + KNO 3, KCl + KNO 3, KCl + NaNO 3, and NaNO 3 + KNO 3. The excess Gibbs energy of each of the six possible binary mixtures of Na +, K +, Cl −, and NO 3 − has been derived; this supplements earlier measurements on the Na +, K +, Cl −, Br − system. It is known that Young's “cross-square” rule holds for both Gibbs energy and enthalpy changes in the Na +, K +, Cl −, Br − system but does not hold for enthalpy changes in the Na +, K +, Cl −, NO 3 − system; significant departures from the rule are now found in the Gibbs energy changes.
