Abstract

In the current study, mussel-inspired modification of graphite nanoplatelets (GnPs@PDA) was integrated with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) to achieve a well-dispersed hybrid filler. Subsequently, the as-prepared GnPs@PDA-MWCNTs were incorporated in poly(phenylene sulfone) (PPSU) via solution blending, followed by hot pressing, to prepare the thermally conducting composites with excellent electromagnetic shielding efficiency. It was observed that the in-plane and through-plane thermal conductivity reached up to 5.4 Wm−1 K−1 and 3.8 Wm−1 K−1, respectively, for the composite containing 17.6 vol% GnPs@PDA-MWCNTs, thus, indicating a dramatic increment of 2060% and 1410% compared to the pure PPSU. Moreover, the obtained composites with high electrical conductivity of 183 Sm−1 exhibited profound EMI effectiveness of 62.9 dB, along with excellent thermal stability. Overall, the developed GnPs@PDA-MWCNTs/PPSU composites are promising alternatives for multifunctional applications in electronics, thermal management and EMI protection at high temperatures.
