Abstract

This paper records the excavation of two moats of the defences of H.M. Dockyard, Bermuda, in 1981. The excavations are part of a programme of work undertaken by the Bermuda Maritime Museum which is now housed in the Keep at the northern end of the Dockyard. The moats are located at the main gate of the Keep and at the Caponier at the S.E. corner of the same fort. At both locations, structural remains of the moats were found, dating from the establishment of the fortifications of the Dockyard in the late 1820s. Seven mooring and marker buoys from the latter part of the 19th century were found in the moat at the main gate of the Keep, a find of some rarity.
