Abstract

In central Scotland a number of the excavated slopes for roadworks failed although conventional soil testing methods and analytical techniques were employed in their design. The paper describes detailed investigations of both failed and stable slopes which revealed that the till was fissured in a systematic manner and it discusses the techniques developed to identify and allow for the fissures in future designs. For the covering abstract of the symposium see IRRD 286603. (TRRL)
