Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the role of the head of school as an instructional leader in Bubi District in Matabeleland North Province in Western Zimbabwe. The population comprised all the primary schools in the district. The respondents were selected using random sampling and were made up of 20 school heads and 200 teachers. The study adopted the descriptive survey design and the questionnaire was used as the only instrument for collecting data and contained both close-ended questions and open-ended questions. The study established that school heads had too many responsibilities that interfered with their role of instructional leader. The study recommends that there is need to streamline the duties of the school head so that they spend most of their time providing instructional leadership. Senior teachers should be systematically involved during the planning and implementation of instructional leadership. Key Words: Role, School head, Instructional leader, Secondary school, District
