Abstract

Abstract: A theatrical boom in Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus over the past two decades has introduced highly political content on stage, along with fresh and innovative new theatrical forms. New Drama, the leading movement within this theatrical boom, captures authentic speech using the verbatim technique and confronts the weighty socio-political situations that all three countries attempt to silence on the national level. Two new volumes of Ukrainian plays since the 2014 annexation of Crimea by Russia demonstrate the breadth and excellence of contemporary Ukrainian playwrighting.
