• An increasing trend of cancer incidence can be observed in the PYRD from 2000 to 2012. • SEM analysis reveals that urbanization and land use pattern affect cancer incidence through environmental factors. • Urbanization has a positive correlation with the incidence of certain types of cancer. • Higher landscape shape index contributes to higher incidence of certain types of cancer.
