Abstract
Summary Expertise in assessing and improving school ethos can be considered important in the work of educational psychologists, and a description is given of a convenient instrument, the School Level Environment Questionnaire (SLEQ, see Appendix 1), for evaluating teachers’ perceptions of school climate. Information is provided on the theoretical rationale behind the development of the technique and on its construction. The full questionnaire is made available for use by educational psychologists together with details of administration. One potentially valuable method of employing data generated by the SLEQ is described, together with a brief report on one early study. Further exploratory study by practising systems‐oriented educational psychologists is encouraged.
