Abstract

A young woman’s powerlessness and inability to exercise sexual choices in her marital home exacerbate the nonconsensual nature of early sex, particularly forced sexual initiation. Worldwide, at least one woman in three has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime. This chapter explores young married women’s perception on sexual and reproductive rights, gender roles, and husband’s extramarital relationship and its association with the experience of sexual and physical violence and sexual health problems. The study analyzes a cross-sectional data on married women (15–29 years) in Delhi, India, during the years 2007–2008. More than two-thirds of women reported ever experiencing coercive sex by husband in their lifetime. Of this, 55 % (p < 0.05) reported coercive sex during the last 12 months of the survey. Among women who ever experienced sexual violence, 44 % had at least one STD symptom during the last 6 months compared to 27 % who did not experience any STD symptoms (p < 0.05); and 59 % (p < 0.05) of women reported problems during menses.
