Abstract

This evidence-based guide is aimed at those studying for or performing the newborn examination as an extended role. It could be used as a pre-course taster to encourage practitioners to undertake this role, which the authors promote as a natural extension of the role of the midwife. This is not so much a manual on how to perform the examination. It is more of a guide on how to examine holistically. Based on the latest research, it aims to provide a standard benchmark for the examination. It outlines the newborn infant physical examination standards, with excellent photographs to demonstrate common conditions and abnormalities. Most charts and diagrams are useful, but a few are too busy, making them difficult to read. An outstanding chapter discusses the importance of behavioural assessment in relation to the newborn examination and how to assist parents understand newborn behaviour and communication cues. This chapter also includes a section on the adaptation process that new parents experience.
