Abstract

Extended Abstract Problem and Purpose: For the period of university students who are confronted with many problems, a difficult period. During this period, students have to cope with stress. Stress is conceptualized as a relationship between the person and the environment that is appraised by the person as taxing or exceeding his or her resources and as endangering wellbeing. Coping with stress is defined as the person's constantly changing cognitive and behavioral efforts to manage specific external and/or internal demands that are appraised as taxing or exceeding the person's resources. This study examines the teacher candidates' association between, self-esteem sub-dimensions and coping with stress sub-dimensions in between the ages of 18 and 23. This study aims, firstly, to examine whether gender plays a decisive role in self-esteem sub-dimensions and coping with stress sub-dimensions. The second aim of the study is to analyses the level at which self-esteem sub-dimensions can predict coping with stress sub-dimensions. Method: The universe of the study was consisted of the teachers candidates who student University of Selcuk, faculty of education and faculty of vocational education. The participants were randomly selected among the first, second, third grade student students at the different departments during 2009- 2010 Academic Year. A total of 290 individuals (190 female and 100 male) completed the Inventory of Attitudes to Coping with Stress and the Self-Esteem Scale. A t test for independent groups was used to determine whether or not gender plays a significant role in self-esteem sub-dimensions and coping with stress sub-dimensions, and multiple regression analysis was also employed to uncover the interaction between self-esteem sub-dimensions and coping with stress sub-dimensions. Results: The studies found that there are gender differences between self-esteems' self-worth and self-confidence sub-dimensions, but were not coping with stress sub-dimensions. Additionally, regression analysis shows that self-esteems sub-dimensions were the most important factors in coping with stress sub-dimensions. Self-worth positive direction predicted active planning and Search for foreign aid. Additionally, self-confidence positive direction predicted active planning and religion asylum. Recommendation: Support to develop a positive self-esteem of individuals from childhood to outsiders. Low self-esteem of individuals will be identified, and prepared for developed programs of self-esteem and comparable stress-coping styles.
