Abstract

This article describes the determination of the decamethylferrocene(Fc*)/decamethylferrocenium (Fc*+) electron transfer self-exchange rate by NMR line-broadening techniques. NMR spectra of Fc*, Fc*+, and several mixtures yield frequency and peak-width data that are used to solve for the self-exchange rate constant. Students obtain rate constants in the range 1.6 x 107 to 2.4 x 107 M-1 s-1 (38 °C in acetone-d6), which is in good agreement with the literature value of 2.4 x 107 M-1 s-1 (25 °C). The experiment represents an alternative to the classic rate of amide bond rotation as a demonstration of the effectiveness of NMR in analyzing dynamic molecular processes.
