Abstract

Objective To investigate the clinical significance and missed diagnosis of UBM and color Doppler ultrasonography for intraocular foreign body. Methods The records of 86 eyes of 86 cases of intraocular foreign body examined by UBM and color Doppler ultrasonography were summarized retrospectively. Results 81 eyes of 81 cases, the intraocular foreign bodies were diagnosed by UBM and color Doppler ultrasnography. The detection rate of intraocular foreign bodies was 94.19% and the rate of missed diagnosis of intraocular foreign body was 5.81%. The percentage of ocular wall foreign bodies was 15.12%. Metallic foreign bodies were in 77 cases which accounted for 89.53%, and non-metallic foreign bodies were in 9 cases which accounted for 10.47%. Conclusion UBM and color Doppler ultrasnography have specific diagnositic value for intraocular foreign body, especially the tiny foreign body and non-metallic foreign body. When imaging examination can not provide effective support, we could not completely exclude the possibility of intraocular foreign bodies and should consider the history and clinical presentation. For trauma patients, we must ask for the medical history in detail and do careful examination, which can reduce the missed diagnosis and improve the level of diagnosis.
