Abstract

The stability behaviour of a Timoshenko column with an intermediate support is examined, by solving the corresponding frequency equation. The structure is loaded by a non-conservative follower force, so that both static and dynamic instabilities can occur. It is suggested that the previously observed jump between divergence and flutter critical loads is in reality a jump between two different kinds of flutter instabilities.
