Abstract

In this report, the author proposes a method for calculating exactly a tooth profile of a cylindrical worm finished by a form-grinding wheel with an arbitrary cutting-edge profile, which is applicable even to a plane wheel for finishing a worm with an involute helicoid. An actual cutting-edge profile of a grinding wheel was used, and effects of misalignments of the grinding wheel upon the tooth profile of the worm were investigated. Using the calculated tooth profile of the worm, the conjugate tooth profile of a worm wheel can also be generated. Thereafter, clearances between a pair of meshing teeth are shown by the contour map and a contact line is obtained. When the pitch of a worm is increased together with slight modification of the pressure angle, the contour map indicates the occurrence of crowning. Effectiveness of this crowning was confirmed by calculating rotational errors of a pair of involute worm gears.
