Abstract

The single-hole states of a model which allows hopping between copper and oxygen in a one-dimensional chain are determined exactly and are shown to give rise to three distinct energy bands. Numerical solutions of the two-hole problem, for chains of up to 13 cells, show that the holes repel each other, which is consistent with perturbation theory in the appropriate limits.
