The author analyses the causes for the war, which is to this day explained in various ways. He attempts to answer the how and why did an initially local war turn into a conflict of global proportions that cost the lives of 40 million people, caused enormous material damage and caused revenge on a grand scale. The so-called "Versailles order in Europe" caused the rise of revanchism, a new wave of militarism and totalitarian ideologies (fascism, clerical fascism, Nazism, communism). With the end of the war began a contradictory world. It was marked by the duality of wealth and poverty and a new dumbing down which led to catastrophe. At the same time, a radical break with pre-war tradition began and was marked by incredible achievements of the human mind in all areas, from science and technology to art.
