Abstract

A new method of estimating the evolutionary stage reached by a contact binary from its observations is proposed. Application to 38 systems shows that all systems of subtype A and some systems of subtype W are evolved systems, from systems which may or may not be contact systems at the zero-age main-sequence stage. Both late-type and early-type contact systems are represented in the set of zero-age contact systems and the masses of their component stars are not confined by the condition proposed by Lucy for contact configuration at age zero.
