Abstract
THERE is only one account on the ultrastructure of cnidarian planula larvae (largely of the surface coat) of the hydrozoan Corydendrium parasiticum1. In view of the importance attached to planulae in Lankester and Hyman's planula-acoel theories on the origins and relationships of the Metazoa2, I studied the planula of the British solitary coral Balanophyllia regia (Anthozoa, Eupsammidae) from a flourishing “colony” established in an indoor tank. Sexual reproduction occurs in September and free swimming orange yellow planulae are produced at this time.
