Abstract

The paper describes the results of a 2-year research project into the design of computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM) systems. The work was undertaken in collaboration with four companies, each of whom were in the process of developing CIM systems. The paper starts by examining some of the difficulties experienced by the companies. Next, the techniques used to design CIM systems are examined leading to the identification of certain principles which must be adhered to if an effective system is to be developed. The paper concludes with a description of a design methodology for CIM which conforms to the principles identified. Adoption of the approach will ensure that the CIM system designed is well structured, modifiable, maintainable and extendable.
