Abstract

It is proposed that the evolution of transport catalysts for required nutrients may have preceded the evolution of biosynthetic pathways for these substances, or occurred at the same time as an alternative solution to the stress of nutrient depletion. If they did not arise at this time, it is likely that transport catalysts did not appear until much later in evolutionary time, after most of the biosynthetic pathways had been developed.
