Abstract

The Canadian Periodicals Price Index is intended to be used as a tool for librarians in the management of serials collections and budget planning. This article traces the development of the Canadian Periodicals Price Index study since its inception in 1989 to the present day. Developments and changes in methodology over the past five years are discussed, as well as trends in the actual prices of periodicals. It is hoped that this overview of the process will shed some light on the evolution of the study so that librarians will find the Index to be even more useful in future years.
