Abstract

The survival of radiolabelled autologous, allogeneic and xenogeneic (sheep) erythrocytes in the lizard Tiliqua rugosa was investigated. It was found that five of six normal lizards did not clear allogeneic erythrocytes significantly more quickly than autologous cells were cleared (T1/2 - 58 days). One lizard showed evidence of immune clearance after an initial period of 13-15 days. In contrast, sheep erythrocytes were rapidly removed from the lizard vascular system. These data are compared to analogous results reported for chickens and suggest that lizard erythrocytes either do not express MHC antigens, or that if they do, then such antigens differ in immunogenicity, degree of polymorphism and/or density.
