Abstract

This article examines the context and factors that contributed to the evolution of the Forest Rights Act 2006. It is primarily based on data documented by members of the Campaign for Survival and Dignity, that record the evolution of the FRA through discussions with various key informants, forest rights movement leaders and members of the Forest Rights Drafting Committee. The author highlights the contributions made by various forest rights organisations and movements in recognising the historical injustice done to millions of forest dwellers both during the colonial and post-colonial period. Sustained dialogues between the state machinery and forest rights organisations in 2004 played an important role in facilitating the enactment of the Forest Rights Act 2006
