Abstract

A 7-year-old girl was observed in our department since 2 years of age for neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). Serial near-infrared fundus imaging (Spectralis HRA, Heidelberg Engineering, Heidelberg, Germany) allowed to assess the increasing tortuosity of a retinal microvascular abnormality over 5 years, from a barely visible simple vascular tortuosity to a markedly tortuous corkscrew pattern (A, 2 years of age; B, 3 years of age; C, 5 years of age; and D, 7 years of age). Although retinal microvascular abnormalities associated with NF1 were initially believed to be congenital malformations stable over time, they appear to be a form of progressive retinal vasculopathy.
