Abstract
Our industry is changing at a dramatic pace. SD video is giving way to HD and data; linear videotape is fast being replaced with HD and data disk systems; and digital cinema is purported to be the next revolutionary stage in the visual entertainment field. While HDcam and similar methods are being touted as the future of moving image acquisition, many rightly remain skeptical. Film is still the ultimate image-capture medium and will be for the foreseeable future, as long as scanning techniques preserve its benefits throughout the new post-production and presentation mediums. This paper describes Cintel's view of the future of film scanning and covers SD/HD and high-speed data transfers from 1K through 4K. The subjects encompassed include resolution, bit depth, and image stability.
