Abstract

Abstract 1. The paper reviewed the history of the power of selection, the response of breeders to clear objectives, and the evolution and application of focused technology in the breeding of meat‐type chicken. 2. It was declared that the breeding industry has been shaped by four major driving forces, namely: cost reduction, quality, versatility and ethical considerations. 3. The impact of these forces on the breeding industry over the last four decades are reviewed and the challenge of future developments considered.
