Abstract

The evolution of digital control in energy control centers of electrical power systems is reviewed. Electrical power systems being large scale systems, decision processes are decomposed in space and time. In this decomposition, energy control center digital control essentially concerns on-line and one hour ahead decision processes for the system considered as a whole. The various historic steps of digital control in energy control centers are described: early stages, computer aided human decision off-line then on-line, computer decision making, computer automatic decision application. The present state of the art of digital control applications in closed loops is presented, including the present standard implementation and two advanced applications, one taking account of transmission security, the other one of load change anticipation constraints. Then, an analysis of the present needs, new concepts and developments under study are presented.
