Abstract

The diversity and antiquity of chemosymbiotic bivalve and bacteriallineages suggest that chemosymbiosis may have played an important role in the early diver­ sification of the Bivalvia this strategy is most widespread, both phylogenetically and geographically. In this article, lexamine where, when, and how these symbioses became established in this important and diverse invertebrate group.
