Abstract

BackgroundSimulation design templates provide a guide for the development, implementation, and evaluation of a simulation scenario. MethodsUsing the Plan-Do-Study-Act quality improvement framework an open-sourced simulation design template underwent revisions to become an institution specific template for use in a corporate nursing orientation program at the Ottawa Hospital in Canada. ResultsA standardized simulation design template that includes numerous components, such as a pre-brief and debriefing script, in alignment with the Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best PracticeTM is used by nurse educators facilitating simulation after five revisions. This new template assisted in a large curriculum revision and re-implementation of simulation education days in a nursing orientation program in February 2022. ConclusionThe finalized simulation design template used by the nurse educators at the Ottawa Hospital has provided a thorough method for curriculum revision, implementation, and facilitation of simulation-based education sessions.
