Abstract
The development of theories of biological evolution and of theories of social or cultural evolution is briefly surveyed. The question of empirical content is kept in the foreground. Contemporary theories of social evolution are at an earlier stage of development than contemporary theories of biological evolution. There is no counterpart to molecular genetics. But contemporary theories of cultural evolution are not content-free. They do generate some testable models.
