Abstract

Abstract This chapter explores the development of evolutionary theory. Evolutionary theory holds that the natural world is steadily changing, that organisms have slowly diverged from common ancestors, and that they have been transformed in geological time. Topics discussed include traditional natural theology, Darwinian evolutionary theory, myths about Lamarck, Lamarck's theory of evolution, Georges Cuvier's disdain for Lamarck's theories, and the Cuvier-Geoffroy debate.
