Abstract

The main theories of evolution include natural selection, genetic drift, genetic mutation and gene flow. To completely explain evolution, these theories have to supplement each other. The most accepted theory and the one mostly referred to is natural selection. Natural selection is defined as “the preservation of favorable variations and the rejection of injurious variations. Variations, either useful or injurious, would not be affected by natural selection, and would be left a fluctuating element. Thus, based on natural selection, the offspring will have advantageous traits leading to a greater chance for survival. This forms the basis of the concepts of survival of the fittest and differential reproduction.
