The Order of Saint John is the last surviving military religious order established in the Holy Land. Remarkably its historical governance structure, ethos, and mission have survived largely intact.2 The Order’s origins date back to the middle of the eleventh century when a hospice for pilgrims run by the religious community of Saint Mary of the Latins was established.
