Abstract

The Metaverse as a world or set of simulated worlds is acquiring a high importance in recent times. The adoption of the name Meta by a social network and the vision of its CEO to offer a virtual world in it is, together with large technological investments, probably the clearest example of this expansion of the concept. This article reviews the current state of the Metaverse and shows the applicability in different fields of the immersive worlds that could be considered Metaverses, as well as a reflection of the possible short-term evolution of the Metaverse concept. Finally, it describes various considerations, both technological and social, that may result from the mass adoption of the Metaverse.
