Abstract

[Evidence-based practice for learning and development in human service organizations] Karin Alexanderson’s article analyzes evidence-based practice (EBP) in social work from different point of views: the character of the work, theories of how people learn and grow in work, and models of implementation of EBP in human service organizations. Some key questions are outlined to be considered when developing EBP in social work: how to reach and use scientific knowledge on a daily basis in work with individuals, the role of the professional, how to follow up, evaluate and learn on both individual- and policy levels and the organizational conditions. A tentative model for this is proposed. EBP is seen as a process where different kinds of knowledge are recognized. The question may not be whether EBP as a concept is used or not, but rather if the social services have the capability to support competent social workers to use the best available knowledge in a mature and sensible way in dialogue with the people who need help.
