Abstract

Case management is defined by the Case Management Society ofAmerica as a collaborative process that assesses, plans, implements, coordinates, monitors, and evaluates options and services to meet an individual's health needs through communication and available resources to promote quality costeffective outcomes (http://www.cmsaonline.com). Case managers are committed to optimizing both quality and costs of health care for their clients. What does case management have to do with research? 1 often hear the response, I am too busy practicing to be doing But, actually, your practice is your research. The most effective case managers, no matter what the setting, practice in an evidencebased mode. Second, case managers can also influence best practice and reimbursement by collecting appropriate information about practice and outcomes. Let us discuss both of these-the use of evidence and the development of evidence by case managers.
