Abstract

•Twenty years ago, the Probation Service in England and Wales was widely regarded as world-leading.•Since then it has been weakened by a series of politically driven and poorly evidenced changes.•A badly flawed and ideologically driven privatisation programme implemented in 2015 has done serious damage.•The recent decision to end this failed programme is an opportunity to redesign better.
